Clothes smell even after being washed?

Have you had your washing machine cleaned? I have a friend who always closed her machine as soon as she was done to prevent her cat from sleeping in it. The repairman pulled off the adjatator, and exposed mold and scum that had accumulated. Once that was removed and she gives time for drying inside before shutting, she no longer has the smell issue.
