How to clean and freshen up older musty kitchen cabinets?

We just moved into a rental house that is a little older and in my opinion could use a kitchen makeover. I wiped down the the shelves and I plan to line them but their is still kind of a musty oder. Any ideas what I can do to fix that or make them smell a little fresher? also I scrubbed the outside of the cabinet doors and some of them have a stickiness that just wont go away, like a grimy sticky substance stuck to the bottom area of the cabinet doors where people put their hands to open it.
