Why does my Aloe Vera Plant stink?

I bought an aloe vera plant yesterday at Lowes. I picked the best looking one and when I got home I cut off a stalk and it smells terrible. The gel is clear and is like VERY VERY THICK mucous, is it normal to be that thick? and also when i cut it open i noticed a yellow liquid come out of the stalk. The Smell is so terrible thought its, like a musty earthy smell, with an over kill of an aloe very smell! Is my plant sick or diseased? Does it have root rot?
